A specialist pediatric dentist, often referred to as a ‘paedodontist’, is a dental professional who specialises in the oral health care of children, from infancy through adolescence. These specialists undergo additional training beyond general dentistry to address the unique needs and concerns associated with paediatric dental care.

Seeking the expertise of a specialist pediatric dentist ensures that your child receives care tailored to their specific needs, promoting a lifetime of good oral health habits. Regular dental visits beginning at an early age are essential for monitoring development, preventing dental issues, and fostering a positive attitude toward dental care.

Paediatric Dental Services

We provide specialist dental services for children…

  • who demonstrate intellectual, medical, physical, psychological and/or emotional problems.
  • with dental trauma.
  • with dental anomalies, including those with cleft lip and or palate.
  • who have been referred from their dentist because they are too young or anxious for routine dental treatment.
  • who require emergency dental treatment.
  • who require treatment under sedation or general anaesthesia

Hypomineralisation

Hypomineralisation, a condition that results in reduced mineral content in tooth enamel, can lead to weakened teeth that are more susceptible to decay and sensitivity. On average, one in seven children are affected by this condition and the exact cause of hypomineralised teeth may not be easily identified, and multiple factors may contribute. Teeth affected by this condition tend to appear chalky white or yellow and patchy.

Early diagnosis and intervention are crucial for managing the condition effectively. If you’re concerned about your child’s dental health, consulting with a dental specialist can provide valuable insights and appropriate guidance for addressing hypomineralised teeth.

PREVENTION IS KEY

Preventative dental care is essential for maintaining the oral health of children, and specialists in paediatric dentistry offer a range of preventative treatments tailored to the unique needs of young patients. Here are some common specialist paediatric prevention treatments:

  • Fluoride Treatment: Fluoride is effective in strengthening tooth enamel, making it more resistant to decay.
  • Dental Sealants: Sealants are protective coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of molars to prevent the accumulation of plaque and bacteria in the deep grooves.
  • Orthodontic Assessments: Early detection of orthodontic issues allows for timely intervention and appropriate orthodontic treatment planning.
  • Oral Hygiene & Nutrition: Educate children and parents on proper oral hygiene practices tailored to the child’s age and developmental stage. Promote a tooth-friendly diet to prevent cavities and support overall oral health.
  • Behaviour Management Techniques: Create a positive and comfortable environment for children during dental visits, encouraging a positive attitude toward oral health.
  • Mouth Guards: Protect the teeth from injury during sports activities.
  • Early Cavity Detection: Detect and address cavities in their early stages to prevent further damage.
  • Monitoring Growth and Development: Track the growth and development of the child’s teeth, jaws, and facial structures.

Treatment

Specialist paediatric dentists are trained to provide a range of dental restorative and extraction treatments, specifically tailored to the unique needs of children. These treatments aim to address issues such as cavities, damaged teeth, and other dental conditions. Here are some common specialist paediatric treatments:

  • Dental Restorations (Fillings): To restore teeth with cavities or minor damage.
  • Stainless Steel Crowns:For more extensive decay or damage, stainless steel crowns can be used to protect and restore primary teeth.
  • Pulpotomy (Baby Tooth Root Canal): To treat extensive decay that reaches the pulp (nerve) of a baby tooth.
  • Space Maintainers: To preserve space for permanent teeth when a primary tooth is lost prematurely.
  • Natural Tooth-Coloured Crowns: For restoring front teeth with cosmetic concerns or structural damage.
  • Simple Extractions: Removal of a primary tooth or a severely damaged permanent tooth.
  • Surgical Extractions: Removal of impacted or partially erupted teeth.
  • Space Maintenance After Extraction: To prevent the shifting of neighbouring teeth after the extraction of a primary tooth.
  • Orthodontic Extractions: Strategic removal of teeth to facilitate orthodontic treatment.

Sedation & GA

We understand that every child is unique, and their dental needs may vary.

Specialist paediatric dental services often include the provision of sedation and general anesthesia to ensure a comfortable and stress-free experience for young patients. These services are especially beneficial for children who may have anxiety, extensive dental treatment needs, or difficulty cooperating during dental procedures.

Why Choose Inhalation Sedation for Your Child?

  • Anxiety Reduction: Inhalation sedation helps alleviate anxiety and nervousness in children, making their dental experience more enjoyable.
  • Quick Onset and Recovery: Nitrous oxide has a rapid onset and allows for a swift recovery, ensuring minimal disruption to your child’s daily activities.
  • Conscious Sedation: Children remain conscious and cooperative during the procedure, creating a positive and interactive dental environment.

Why Choose General Anaesthesia for Your Child?

  • Pain-Free Experience: General anaesthesia ensures that your child is completely comfortable and pain-free throughout the dental procedure.
  • Ideal for Complex Treatments: This approach is suitable for children who require multiple procedures or more extensive dental treatments.
  • Safe and Monitored: Our experienced team, including licensed anaesthesiologists, ensures the safety and well-being of your child throughout the entire process.

Inhalation sedation, often referred to as “happy gas” or nitrous oxide, is a safe and gentle method used to help children relax during dental treatments. Administered through a comfortable mask, nitrous oxide induces a calming effect, ensuring a positive and anxiety-free dental visit for our little patients.

General anaesthesia is a medical procedure where children are gently put to sleep, ensuring they are completely unaware and free from pain during dental treatments. This approach is particularly beneficial for children who may have difficulty cooperating during dental procedures or those with extensive treatment needs.

Inhalation sedation services are available with Dr Mohsin Chaudhary at 78MPR.

Treatment under GA is provided safely and effectively at Nuffield Health, Tunbridge Wells Hospital. Your child’s consultant, Dr Chaudhary will perform the treatment alongside a specialist paediatric anaesthetist and dental nurse.

A small and comfortable mask is placed over your child’s nose. The mask is connected to a machine that delivers a carefully controlled mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen. Your child will be instructed to breathe in through the nose and out through the mouth. The nitrous oxide induces a calming effect, helping to reduce anxiety and make the child feel more relaxed. The dental team will closely monitor your child’s vital signs, such as heart rate and oxygen levels, throughout the procedure to ensure their safety and well-being. While under inhalation sedation, your child will remain conscious and responsive. The dentist will communicate with them throughout the procedure to provide reassurance and guidance.

Schedule a consultation with us today, and let us pave the way for a relaxed and enjoyable dental visit.
