In addition to regular visits to the hygienist, maintaining a strong daily routine is crucial for keeping children’s teeth healthy. Here are our top tips for a child-friendly dental hygiene routine:
1. Brushing Twice a Day
- Use a fluoride toothpaste (at least 1000ppm fluoride for children under 6, 1350-1500ppm for older kids).
- Encourage brushing for two minutes, morning and night.
- Use a soft-bristled toothbrush or an electric toothbrush for better plaque removal.
2. Flossing Once a Day
- Start flossing as soon as two teeth touch to prevent decay between teeth.
- Use child-friendly flossers for an easier grip.
3. Eating Tooth-Friendly Foods
- Encourage a balanced diet rich in dairy, fruits, and vegetables.
- Limit sugary snacks and acidic drinks, especially between meals.
- Drink plenty of water to help rinse away food particles and bacteria.
4. Supervise Brushing & Encourage Independence
- For younger children, help with brushing until they can do it effectively on their own (around age 7).
- Make brushing fun with reward charts, music, or apps.
5. Consider Additional Protection
- Fluoride varnish and sealants can provide extra protection against cavities, especially for molars.
- Our team can advise if these are suitable for your child.
